Memorial Day ceremony in Edgewater draws 100 people

EDGEWATER -- The air was hot and breezy and the expected rain held off as a tent filled with 100 or so patriotic people enjoyed the Memorial Day ceremony at the Edgewater-New Smyrna Cemetery ceremony on U.S. 1 with American Legion Post 285 Cmdr. Wallace Ferreira serving as the master of ceremonies.

Vintage planes take to the skies during Edgewater's Memorial Day Service. There was a flyover by Spruce Creek Gaggle and presentation of colors by Boy Scouts Troop 442, Girl Scouts 443, and Sea Scouts Ship 495.

A series of speakers addressed the importance of the national holiday as buglers an a bagpipe entertained along with payer from post 285 Chaplain Wally Alvord.

Children and adults turned their heads for the 21 gun- and cannon-salutes. This Memorial Day Celebration reminded me that freedom is not free for those who sacrificed for their country.
