Oak Hill Commissioner's Corner

OAK HILL -- Now that its almost the end of the school year, people need to reflect on how well Burns Sci-Tech. Charter School has done. We have won awards for the best school, our teachers have gotten the Crystal Apple award for excellence, and we have almost 100 kids on the waiting list for next year.

OAK HILL -- Although we have had to say good-bye to the space shuttle program, apparently all is not lost across Mosquito Lagoon. At the launch site at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station stood a Falcon 9 rocket that blasted off Sunday night from Kennedy Space Center for the International Space Station.

OAK HILL -- It is Fall so let's check in on fishing here in Oak Hill. It appears that most of the brown water caused by algae has improved, and people are once again catching and eating fish from Mosquito Lagoon.

OAK HILL -- On 9/11, I met a brother I never knew I had. We arranged to meet at a Starbuck's in Orlando.

When I was growing up in St.Augustine, Labor Day always signaled the start of school and the beginning of Fall. I got new Saddle oxfords and a few dark print dresses because it was supposed to be cooler, after all.

OAK HILL -- Now that kids are back in school, I want to talk about the Oak Hill Library. Located in a small building on Halifax Avenue next to the Post Office, it has many DVDs as well as all of the latest best-seller books.

OAK HILL -- School starts Monday in Volusia County and Burns Sci-Tech. in Oak Hill will be ready! Their huge new building was dedicated Wednesday, Aug. 15, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

OAK HILL -- The rains have made everything in Oak Hill look green and luscious, and the danger of wildfires has subsided so what am I thinking? Yep, fireworks and the 4th of July. We are so fortunate to live in a beautiful land where we are free and can celebrate our nation's independence any way we choose.

OAK HILL -- The message I have today is short and sweet and to the point: Let's hope everyone here in Oak Hill and throughout Volusia County will take a moment or two this Memorial Day to remember and give thanks for those who sacrificed their lives so that we live in a free country where we can worship, speak and behave as a free society.
